Zurich Airport to Interlaken, between two lakes.
Interlaken sits in the gap between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, and it is the doorway to the Jungfrau — Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, Wengen and Mürren all start here.
Two ways to get there
There is a fast way and a beautiful way, and we will take whichever you prefer.
The motorway via Bern is the default: about 1 h 50, almost entirely on the A1 and A6, and dependable in any weather. It is the right choice if you have landed off a long flight and simply want to arrive.
The Brünig Pass via Lucerne takes around 2 h 15 and is one of the loveliest drives in the country — along Lake Lucerne, over the pass at 1,008 m, and down the length of Lake Brienz into Interlaken. If your holiday starts the moment you land, this is a better first hour, and the cost difference is modest. Tell us in the booking notes.
Beyond Interlaken
Most people passing through Interlaken are actually going somewhere else in the valley, and we drive to all of it:
- Grindelwald — about 30 minutes, under the Eiger north face
- Lauterbrunnen — about 25 minutes into the valley of 72 waterfalls
- Wengen and Mürren — both car-free; we drive to Lauterbrunnen, where the mountain railway and cable car take over
- Thun, Spiez, Brienz and the lakeside villages
- Gstaad, over the Saanenmöser — about 1 h 15 further
The car-free villages
Wengen and Mürren work like Zermatt: no road access for visitors' vehicles. We drive to Lauterbrunnen, where the Wengernalpbahn goes up to Wengen and the cable car and railway reach Mürren. It is a short, frequent and well-signed hand-off, and hotels are used to meeting guests at the top — but it does mean nobody can be driven to the door, and it is better known before you book than on arrival.

Worth knowing
Train or private transfer?
Interlaken is well served by rail, with a change at Bern on most connections.
Take the train when…
- You are one or two people with light luggage
- You are going on to a car-free village anyway and will change to a mountain railway
- You are comfortable with a change at Bern
Take a private transfer when…
- You are a family or a group of three or more
- You want the Brünig route — the scenic drive simply is not available by direct train
- You have hiking, ski or paragliding equipment
- You are going to Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen and want one continuous journey
- You land late and the connections have thinned out
Questions
What people ask us.
How long is the transfer from Zurich Airport to Interlaken?
About 1 hour 50 minutes by motorway via Bern, or around 2 hours 15 by the scenic Brünig Pass route through Lucerne. Both are quoted the same way — tell us which you prefer.
Can you take the scenic route instead of the motorway?
Yes. The Brünig route runs along Lake Lucerne and Lake Brienz and is considerably more beautiful. Mention it in the booking notes and we will plan for the extra time.
Can you drive me to Wengen or Mürren?
Not all the way — both are car-free. We drive to Lauterbrunnen, where the mountain railway serves Wengen and the cable car and railway reach Mürren. The connection is short and frequent.
Do you serve Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen directly?
Yes, both by road — Grindelwald is about 30 minutes beyond Interlaken and Lauterbrunnen about 25.
Is Interlaken Ost or West the right drop-off?
If you are going to a hotel we drop at the hotel. If you are connecting to a mountain railway, Interlaken Ost is almost always the station you want.
