Zermatt is car-free — here is how it ends

No private vehicle reaches Zermatt. The road stops at Täsch, five kilometres short, where the Matterhorn Terminal connects to a shuttle train that runs every 20 minutes and takes 12 minutes into the village.

We drive you to Täsch, see you and the luggage onto the shuttle, and your hotel meets you in Zermatt — electric taxis and hotel porters are how the whole village works. It sounds like a complication and is in practice the easiest part of the day.

The drive

From Geneva the road runs along the north shore of Lake Geneva past Lausanne and Montreux, turns inland at the head of the lake, and follows the Rhône valley east through Martigny and Sion to Visp. There it turns south into the Mattertal and climbs to Täsch.

Around three hours. It is a genuinely beautiful drive — vineyards on the valley sides, the Dents du Midi, then the high peaks closing in for the last hour — and it is mostly fast road, with only the final stretch being properly mountainous.

Saturdays in ski season are the exception. This is the main artery to every Valais resort, and changeover day loads it heavily. A three-hour drive can become four in peak weeks. We plan for it; it is worth allowing for it in your flight times too.

Geneva or Zurich for Zermatt?

Both are about three hours, so it comes down to flights. Geneva is the more natural approach — the routing is simpler and the road is faster for longer — and it also serves Verbier, Crans-Montana, Saas-Fee and Chamonix, so it is the better base if you are combining resorts. Zurich makes sense if the flights are materially better, and we run that route just as regularly.
